I have a fuse that keeps blowing that powers the windows. The truck is an ‘86 D150. Fortunately, it only seems to blow when I have the windows all the way down. I know there could be a short somewhere, but it blows randomly. Sometimes after a day, other times weeks later. Other than a short, what else might be causing the fuse to go?

it blows when you put the windows up or just blows randomly while it’s down? I might suggest that the window mechanism is putting a strain on the motor and blowing the fuse?

I believe it blows randomly while the window is down. After I replace the fuse it will go roll up and down with no issues.

A few questions first.
Does the fuse blow while the window is moving? If so, always the same window?
Is there any other equipment that also stops working?
Any other fuses you’re having trouble with?

Check the wiring in the doors including the section that goes through the boot and into the doors. Could be you have some damaged/cracked wiring. With an older vehicle like that, it’s definitely possible. Hell, I had to fix some wiring like that and I’m driving a 2007 Focus.

The window goes down fine, but will not roll back up later due to the fuse. Once the fuse is replaced it will go up and down freely immediately after replacement.
The windows are the only thing effected by that fuse, and that is the only fuse that constantly goes.
The taillight fuse has blown once in two years. I do not believe it is from the same issue as the window fuse has blown more than 5 times.

The wires for the windows in the driver side door jam were cut previous to my ownership. I have spliced the cables together using a crimp splice. Is that not how I should have fixed the wiring and how did you fix the wiring in the Focus?

If it moves quickly, I doubt it’s the motor. Since it only goes on the way up, that makes me think it could be a fault in the door wiring since the rest of the electrical system doesn't know which way the window is moving. I'd pull the door panel and check all the connections and wiring. The switch itself might be shorting out intermittently too. Other then that, I’d have to check my wiring diagrams at work to see if there’s any other component or circuit that could possibly put load on that fuse. What amp fuse are you using, by the way?

Check to make sure a penny didn’t fall into the 12v/cigarette lighter socket. I’ve had a more than one car this was the cause of weird random shorts as described. One guy took his F 150 to three different dealers before I solved the mystery.

The motors were just put in last year, so they should be good. The fuse is a 5 amp fuse and I think the first one that blew was the original fuse. I have repaired the drivers side wiring as it was cut previously and will check tomorrow to make sure there are no other nicks in the wires. Thanks for the help!

What I did was cut the bad section of wiring that was basically before and after the rubber boot where the wire feeds into the door and spliced in a section of new wire. I also put dielectric grease on the connections and shrink wrap over the splices. That way it’s only new wire that’s flexing and also there’s little chance of moisture getting in or a short happening. You don’t want any splices to be subject to any bending forces.
The end result looked something like this:
(taken from this instruction I followed: http://forums.focaljet.com/showthread.php… )
And those splices get pulled back into the body or door with enough slack in the new wire to allow for this. The amount of wire I spliced it was a bit more than what is show in the instruction. I spliced in about 8-10 inches of wire. I wanted there to be plenty of slack so there would be no bending action on the splices themselves.
Note as well that my wiring problem was giving me blown fuses as well and so far, the wiring fix has resolved the issue. Haven’t had any blown fuses since I fixed it last weekend. And it has even rained since I fixed the wiring.

That looks much better than what I did. I’ll redo the wiring tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem. My splices are in the door jam which leaves them more exposed to the elements and they are probably bending soon. Thanks for the help and info!

A 5 amp sounds really small for a window motor. In fact, I would expect it to blow when it has to lift the window-much more work then lowering it. I'll check my service manual yet when I get back to my computer at home. I'd expect at least a 10 amp fuse required.

That would be awesome if that was the problem. I didn’t even think to check to make sure the fuse was correct. I just replaced what was already there.

looks like you have a 5 amp relay fuse and a 30 to power it. let me know which fuse is popping.

It is fuse 11 that keeps blowing. I looked it up and it does appear to require a 30 amp fuse. Thanks for the help as the incorrect fuse never crossed my mind as being the problem.

No problem. Happy to help.
